SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA & POLICY SUMMARYThe Music School of Niagara accepts applicants for
financial aid/scholarships based on need and/or ability and does not
discriminate on the basis of race, gender or religion. Each applicant must
fill in and submit a Board-approved Scholarship Application form on the outset
of the request, accompanied by proof of financial need. Scholarships are rewarded on the basis of economic need,
talent and teacher recommendation in the form of tuition remission. The
value of a whole year’s scholarship is approximately $500, based subjectively
on the number of weeks in a year. Partial scholarships may also be
awarded, depending on the student’s demonstrated financial background and
remaining weeks in the School Calendar year. Since demonstrated ability is one criterion for award,
there is generally a three-month waiting period for financial aid. This
can be waived if the student has been enrolled at the Music School for at least
a quarter previous to application. The application and financial documentation are presented
to the Scholarship Committee by the Executive Director. After review, a
determination is made as to whether the student is eligible for financial aid.
The Director also submits the direct input of the student’s teacher, who is
asked to appraise whether the student is making suitable musical progress to
warrant such an award. If an award is made, the student is reevaluated
quarterly to determine whether there has been a significant change in either
financial status or musical progress.
